Putting Healthy back into the NHS

The idea that Agile Working = Healthy Work Environment is finally getting a literal interpretation – by the National Health Service. The NHS has recently got wise to the hugely positive psychological benefits that can be gained from an agile working environment. In fact, the concept is slowly being introduced across the NHS to allow administrative and clinical staff to work wherever, whenever and however they want – all to make sure they can once again spend as much time as possible with their patients.

Agile working in practise (out of the practice).

A struggling health trust has recently been held up as a great example of how agile working can potentially allow the NHS to be far more effective. The North-East London NHS Trust (NELFT) unveiled a brand spanking new state-of-the-art agile working space and training centre in Raynham, Havering. This intelligently considered environment boasts 165 agile workspaces, seven meeting rooms, six training rooms, two IT spaces, a boardroom, a shared central workspace and a meeting pod. That’s quite a feat for an institution often said to be behind the times.

Providing community and mental health services across Redbridge and Waltham Forest, NELFT was judged to require improvement in its last Care Quality Commission inspection in 2016 – its mental health services for children and young people were also criticised in one location.

Chief executive John Brooder said “Agile working will transform the way the trust cares for its patients. Many trusts allow corporate staff to work in agile ways, but we wanted to go further and equip nursing staff with the tools to spend more time with their patients and less time in an office doing admin.

“Staff are able to use mobile devices while visiting in the community which frees up their time and allows them longer to speak with the patient. These steps are making staff more efficient and delivering a better service for patients.”

So, is Agile Working a cure for the NHS?

As go-to experts in the field on agile working, RHINO believe that this philosophy could really help NHS staff and patient morale long term, rather than simply acting as a placebo or sticking plaster. The ideas they are starting to implement can directly target the problems:

FLEXIBILITY:

People do not generally join the NHS to become embroiled in a world of box ticking bureaucracy, but rather to help patients. Freeing up staff to spend more time doing real one-on-one work gives them the flexibility they desire and increased job satisfaction.

ENGAGEMENT:

Once employees can see that they have been listened to and are able to work in a way that complements their role in the system, they are much more likely to be engaged and happy in what they are doing, which directly leads to increased effectiveness.

RETENTION:

It may sound obvious, but when people are happy in the work they are doing, they are much more likely to stay, allowing you to retain the very best assets within your business – for the NHS, it is vital that they keep hold of their best people rather than lose them to the private sector.

HEALTH:

The raison d'être of the NHS, yet so often we hear stories of overworked staff suffering the highest levels of stress, leading to ill health. Fortunately, almost every research paper into agile working shows a direct correlation with improved employee health and lower sick leave.

To find out how agile working could directly benefit the health and wellbeing of your workforce, why not contact RHINO to discuss a consultation.

Wellbeing App by KAYA

Let’s bring positivity back to your workplace.

Pg 2:

Happiness is every employee’s right.

Whether you are a large corporate business, an SME or a start-up, you will have your own ways of investing in your people. And the best way to maximise both your employee and business potential is to ensure they are happy and feel appreciated.

Every employee is different, with different wellbeing needs. Yet many businesses still operate using a common wellbeing programme without room for personalisation – which leads to £1,000,000s wasted and disconnected colleagues. We say why have a shiny 'one-size-fits-all' strategy when you can gain a bespoke understanding of each employee’s wellbeing needs?

Financial   Emotional   Physical   Social   Psychological

Ploughing a small fortune into corporate gym membership may keep a few people happy some of the time but rarely does it improve your employee turnover. The odd business perk, in isolation, is never going to combat stress and anxiety.

Employees need to know that they are considered, valued and cared for as individuals. A mandatory HR survey simply doesn’t cut it in a forward thinking work environment.

Pg 3:

Helping HR.

We get it, as an HR department it is difficult to get buy-in from senior management for any wellbeing initiative or future development programme. At the same time, employees are often keen to talk about their financial concerns but reluctant to admit their physical wellbeing.

How much does the individual matter?

While it is difficult to demonstrate the Return on Investment (ROI) of employee engagement programmes, the wellbeing of your people is paramount to success. Any business is only as good as its people – if those people feel underappreciated, it goes without saying that your finances suffer.

Undervalued employees =

Increased employee absenteeism

 Reduced employee retention rate

 Leading to:

An industry reputation as an unsympathetic employer

So what is the solution here?

Identify every employee’s needs and assess them individually. Let their line manager suggest improvements. Measure the impact of these improvements on their performance and productivity to glean demonstrable ROI. Find out what’s best for an individual team rather than what worked somewhere else.

Easier said than done? Not with the KAYA App

Forget interventions, spreadsheets and surveys. The KAYA Wellbeing app is the simplest way to ascertain each employees’ unique needs – it lets you identify an action plan that will lead to visible improvements in productivity in almost no time at all. A few simple steps and you’ll noticeably improve each individual’s welfare, which in turn will lead to sky-rocketing ROI and increased employee retention.
